Ask Us Anything: Marketplace Answers Healthcare Traveler Questions

Marketplace leaders, Dan DeVeney and Shanna Shore Matthews, answer questions about the current state of the healthcare staffing industry, how travelers can succeed in their careers, and why the utilization of a staffing platform is important.

Here are some of the topics they dove into:

“I started traveling during the pandemic and rates were much higher than they are now. Are pay rate changes common?”

During the pandemic, hospitals faced a unique situation where they had to pay substantial amounts to attract travel nurses and other healthcare workers. With government aid and the pressing need for survival, gross weekly pay soared to unprecedented levels, sometimes surpassing $10,000 per week. Now, things are different.

“Pay rates were elevated in the latter half of 2020 and throughout 2021 with the Cares Act,” said Shanna Shore Matthews. “Once the Cares Act expired, the rates for travelers normalized. We are now in a steady market for pay packages and they are higher than pre-2020, which is a great sign for the market normalization.”

“My pay package changed for an extension offer. Why does this happen?”

It can be a variety of reasons, but it’s typically related to the facility budget within the given timeframe of your extension offer.

“If the new pay package doesn’t work for you, that’s okay,” said Shore Matthews. “You can now decide if being at that facility in that location is your number one priority OR if it’s making additional weekly take home pay. Your recruiter can work with you on that and find what works for you to fit your personal situation!”

“There are some state laws that require pay transparency on jobs. How does that affect Marketplace?”

Marketplace is in compliance with all state laws surrounding pay transparency. “The coolest thing was followed the guidelines in all 50 states, even if that state does not demand pay ranges, we are providing it anyway for your convenience”, said Shore Matthews.

“What do I do if a facility doesn’t adhere to the schedule I was given initially?”

This can be frustrating, but there are steps that can be taken. “Call your recruiter and discuss your feelings as well as ask your recruiter to work with the facility to find out why and what can be done,” said Shore Matthews. “Sometimes it is an honest mistake and can be rectified if you just ask!”

It’s also a good reminder that travelers are needed in facilities to fill in schedule gaps and this can shift based on the perm staff, so try to remain flexible if these situations arise and lean on your recruiter for support.

“Why is Marketplace the better choice when I’m looking for my next travel position?”

The biggest differentiator on Marketplace is the healthcare traveler is in control.

“You control the entire process as well as who you decide to share your information with,” said Shore Matthews. “If you do not choose to share a profile with an agency, you will not get a single call text or email. Further, Marketplace does not sell any of your data to 3rd parties. The agencies on Marketplace are carefully selected to ensure you have a great travel experience.”

“What types of careers are offered on Marketplace? Am I limited to just nursing positions?”

Nope — you’re not limited! “We currently offer all travel nursing specialties along with allied careers including IRL modalities (intervention, radiology, and lab),” said Dan DeVeney. “We’re also in discussions to add additional modalities (such as advanced practice) and job types (such as perm or per diem) in the future.”

“Do I really need a profile on  Marketplace?”

The short answer is yes. We require a profile on Marketplace to apply for any position.

“Some of the most desirable locations or positions can receive hundreds of applications and those facilities don’t have the time to review each one,” said DeVeney. We want to make sure that all our candidates are creating profiles and adding as much information as possible for two reasons: 1) we can create the best job matches for you and 2) you can get hired faster.
