Travel nurse salary trends

After an eventful year in healthcare, the demand for travel nurses in the U.S. continues to soar. In fact, while travel nurses traditionally make up 3 to 4 percent of the country’s total nursing community, recent studies show that percentage has jumped to a whopping 10 percent.

As the demand for RNs continues to climb, travel nurse pay rates do, as well. Of course, salaries can vary depending on a nurse’s specialty and location of practice, but overall, the average salary for travel nurses has increased dramatically over the past couple years.

In 2020, the average annual salary of a travel nurse was just over $75,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and this year, Indeed reports travel RN salaries as high as $110,000 a year. Nowadays, an average registered nurse (RN) travel assignment can pay between $3,000 and $5,000 per week, including non-taxable reimbursements, which is nearly tripled average weekly wage in 2019.

But why have travel nurse salaries skyrocketed over a short span of time? A surge in patient numbers, difficulty retaining perm staff because of burnout, the nationwide nursing shortage, and a global pandemic have drastically exacerbated the need for traveling RNs.

“There was a nursing shortage before,” Ernest Grant, president of the American Nurses Association, said to Fox News. “[The pandemic] only exacerbated what we’re seeing as a shortage. There’s an estimated need of over 2 million nurses in the next five years—so there’s a lot we need to address.”

With more than 45,000 job listings for RNs in nearly every specialization, Marketplace is the prime job board for travel RNs. Save your valuable time and efficiently narrow down your travel nurse job options using Marketplace.

Allied health worker salary trends

Not only are travel nurses in demand, but so are allied healthcare travelers. Allied workers are other care providers outside of physicians and nurses and usually have a job title as technician/assistant or therapist/technologist in a specified field.

Typically, a career as a technician requires at least a two-year educational degree, whereas a technologist/therapist will more than likely require a minimum of a four-year degree with the possibility of a master’s or doctorate, as well. Assistants perform procedures under the supervision of the technologist or therapist as the technologist diagnoses patients, develops treatment plans, and teaches students their ways.

While there is a myriad of allied health careers, All Allied Health Schools identified the top three allied professions as:

  • Occupational therapy assistant (OTA). OTAs work alongside occupational therapists (OTs) to help clients recover the ability to perform daily living activities after an accident, injury, or illness. OTAs help patients relearn how to get dressed, brush their teeth, go to work, and other common everyday tasks. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects the OTA career to grow by 34 percent by 2030, opening thousands of OTA job opportunities for allied professionals across the country.

  • Physical therapy assistant (PTA). Often confused for an OTA, PTAs are similar, except physical therapists (PTs) and PTAs help patients relearn how to effectively move their bodies. Like OTAs, the BLS project a significant growth of 32 percent by 2030 due to an aging Baby Boomer population with growing healthcare issues.

  • Speech-language pathologist (SLP). SLPs are healthcare professionals who assess, diagnose, treat, and help prevent communication and swallowing disorders in kids and adults. As the American population continues to get older and become more likely to experience conditions like strokes or dementia, SLPs become more in demand. In fact, the BLS foresees a career growth rate of 29 percent by 2030.
